What is Paraphilia and Paraphilic Disorders?

These are situations in which sexual gratification or orgasm is correlated with unnatural behaviours or imagery which is considered abnormal in the community. To prevent the stigma of labels, the word paraphilia, derived from Greek roots meaning “together with” and “love,” is now used to define what were formerly known as sexual perversions.

A paraphilia is a emotional disorder. Paraphilia is a sexual arousal and pleasure disorder in which a person’s sexual arousal and gratification are based on a fantasy theme of an unusual event or object that becomes the primary focus of sexual conduct.

DSM-5 describes 8 of the more commonly observed paraphilic disorders:

  • Voyeuristic disorder.
  • Exhibitionistic disorder.
  • Frotteuristic disorder.
  • Sexual masochism disorder.
  • Sexual sadism disorder.
  • Pedophilic disorder.
  • Fetishistic disorder.
  • Transvestic disorder.

Some Disorders are described below:

1. Bondage – The combining of Sadism and Masochism is called bondage.

2. Fetichism — Sexual satisfaction by contact with articles of opposite sex.

3. Frotteurism — Contact with other persons to obtain sexual gratification.

4. Masochism — It is Opposite to sadism. Derived from the name of Leopold von Sacher-masoch, an Austrian novelist. Being whipped by his wife used to be a stimulant for his literary work. In other words, “The derivation of pleasure from one’s own pain”.

5. Necrophagia — Necros = corpse; phagia = to eat. The act of eating dead bodies or carrion.

6. Necrophilia — Necros = corpse; Philia = Love. Sexual intercourse with dead body.

Necrophilia, also known as necrophilism, necrolagnia, necrocoitus, necrochlesis, and thanatophilia.
Necrophilia is a term derived from the Greek words philios (attraction to/love) and nekros (dead body).

Necrophilia is a pathological fascination with corpses, which frequently manifests as a desire to engage in sexual acts with them, such as sexual activity.

Necrophiliac

> A person who finds sexual pleasure in or is drawn to dead bodies.

> A person who is enthralled or intrigued by death or murder.

> Necrophiliacs are those who relish violence, whether in the form of terrorism or war.

7. Priapism — Painful penile erection in absence of sexual desire.

8. Pyromania — Sexual stimulation while seeing flames or, destruction of buildings.

9. Satyriasis — It means uncontrollable or excessive sexual desire in a man.
It is derived from the Satyrs who in Greek mythology were drunken hyper-sexual goat-man creatures who were attendant upon Dionysus.

10. Transvestism — Trans = opposite, Vesta = clothing or Eonism. The term is derived from the name of Chevelier d’ Eon Beamont, a Frenchman. It is usually found in the males who derive sexual pleasure by wearing female dress.

11. Undinism — Sexual pleasure by witnessing the act of Urination.

12. Voyeurism (Scoptophilia) — Peeping Tom. It is sexual enjoyment from watching.

Cannibal

A person who consumes human flesh.

Ephebophile

A late- or post-adolescent, or a kid who has gone through puberty and has advanced indications of adult sexual development, is referred to as an ephebophile. In most cases, this refers to youths aged 15 to 19.

Hebephile

Hebephile is a newly suggested diagnostic categorization in which persons have a sexual attraction for youngsters who are on the verge of puberty, between the ages of 11 and 14.
